CPCS Crane Supervisor Training - A62

Duration: 4 days (Times may vary according to candidate's application)

To comply with the lifting and slinging equipment regulations and meet the code of practice laid down by the British Standards for the safe use of cranes, Hewden training offers an appointed person training programme.

The appointed person develops the safe system of work for lifting operations and will include risk assessments and method statements.

The course delegates will be people who are required to supervise and plan the safe systems of work using lifting equipment. An understanding of working with cranes and lifting equipment is required.

This training programme has duration of 4 days and meets the requirements for CPCS approval with a final CPCS assessment.

Course Aim

To provide delegates with the training and knowledge to enable them to understand the appointed persons role and crane supervisor responsibilities.

Course Outcomes

The delegates will be able to explain or carry out the following:

  • Explain the legislation for LOLER 98, Puwer 98, HASAW 74 regulations
  • Explain the code of practice BS7121 / 1 & 3
  • Explain the difference between crane hire and contract lift
  • Explain the duties and responsibilities of an appointed person
  • Explain the requirements for dismantling/assembly of lifting equipment for lifting people
  • Explain the different types of cranes and terminology for truck mounted all terrain, low headroom and crawler cranes
  • Demonstrate how to correctly set outriggers to lift and level cranes
  • Explain how to determine safe working loads
  • Demonstrate how to use Duty Charts. (Includes Fly Jibs)
  • Explain the purpose of outreach and axle locks
  • Calculate the number of falls to be left on a hoist drum
  • Explain functions and information that is provided to operators and warning information to others in the work area. (RCI)
  • Explain calculation of point loadings / outrigger spreader mat sizes to give maximum protection against ground subsidence
  • Explain reasons for levelling crane & the effect it would have on radius & boom deflection
  • Explain the different methods of communication: (Hand signals / radios)
  • Explain the documentation in the crane files including lifting accessories
  • Explanation of Uniform Method of Rating Slings: Chain / Wire / Web / Shackles
  • Demonstrate slinging techniques for Balanced / unbalanced & loose bundles
  • Calculation of weights & centres of gravity
  • Calculation of sling angles & lengths & factors of safety
  • Explanation of Proximity Hazards, Overhead Power Cables, Underground Services and Counterweight Swing
  • Communications to necessary authorities
  • Explain and demonstrate the use of lift limiting devices
  • Understand a lift plan
  • Understand the method statement and risk assessment
  • Communicate method statement and risk assessment to those involved ion the lift
Certification

Successful delegates will be awarded a red CPCS trained operator card if an in date supervisor health and safety test has been achieved.
